The Puerto Rico Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for the manufacturing sector was above the threshold, reaching a value of 54.4 in January 2019, with a difference of 7.1 percentage points, compared to the results of December 2018.

This product is intended to measure the short-term conditions of the manufacturing sector in Puerto Rico. “Given the complexity of a Decennial Census, activities and projects intensify as we approach the date of the enumeration (April 1, 2020). We are already a little more than a year away from the event, and in this case the application and evaluation phase of candidates for the various positions offered by the Census Bureau begins. Timely recruitment is vital, since the positions involve specialized training that will result in the best possible enumeration of the population,” said Alberto L. Velázquez Estrada, Manager of Statistical Projects at the Institute.

For his part, Dr. Orville M. Disdier, Acting Executive Director, noted that “The preparation of the Decennial Census is a complex and very precise task, which is carried out in a relatively short time. Fortunately, at the Institute we are coordinating and managing all the work processes that need to be completed before April 1, 2020. All of the Institute's demographic and statistical work, vital for the economic and social development of Puerto Rico, is up to date.”

THE POPULATION OF PUERTO RICO IS ESTIMATED AT 3.2 MILLION IN 2018

With the post-hurricane effect, it points to a decrease of 14% since the 2010 Decennial Census

San Juan, PR — El U.S. Census Bureau released today the most recent annual population estimates for Puerto Rico. These statistics refer to July 1, 2017 and include the components of annual population change since July 1, 2010, which support the population estimate since the beginning of the decade. As the leading entity of the Network State Data Center (SDC) of the U.S. Census Bureau in Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Statistics Institute (Institute) presents this summary of the findings of the new annual population estimates for 2018:

1. The population of Puerto Rico was estimated at 3,195,153 people as of July 1, 2018.
2. The impact of the hurricanes (Irma and María) in 2017 is included in the new estimates. These hurricanes further fueled the downward trend in population size in Puerto Rico. The absolute population change between July 2017 and 2018 was estimated to be close to 130,000 inhabitants, representing 3.9% of the total population.
3. Compared to the last 2010 Census, when the official list resulted in 3,725,789 people, the new estimate points to a cumulative decrease in the current decade of close to 14% until 2018.
4. In relation to the resident population 18 years of age or older (of voting age), this was estimated at 2,601.142 million, comprising 81 percent of the population in Puerto Rico.
5. The components of population change include that, between July 1, 2017 and July 1, 2018, about 24,000 births and 31,000 deaths occurred in Puerto Rico. As a result, annual population estimates reflect more deaths than births, resulting in a natural increase close to -6 thousand people. Regarding migration, the estimated net balance was approximately -123 thousand people during the same period.

“The 2018 population estimates give a little more detail to the repercussions of the hurricanes of the past year 2017 on the demographic components of Puerto Rico. The combination of a negative natural increase in the population (more deaths than births), combined with the drive of the already high net emigration, points to an impressive population loss of 3.9% in just one year. This presents us with a difficult scenario to assimilate in terms of the speed of the decrease, as well as the direct repercussions it entails on the local scene. On the other hand, the operations of the next Decennial Census 2020 are becoming more important, so that they result in the best possible official enumeration, then you can confirm the drastic demographic changes estimated during the current decade,” said Alberto L. Velazquez Estrada, Manager of Statistical Projects at the Institute.

After the completion of a Decennial Census (such as the 2010 Census) the U.S. Census Bureau prepare the annual population estimates, which allow us to approximate the population during the decade before the next Census. These estimates are prepared by analyzing data on births, deaths and migration. As a result, with each new publication of the estimates, adjustments are made to the previously estimated years. For example, with the publication of the 2018 estimates announced in this release, the estimates already published for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 were revised. Each publication is distinguished according to the year in which they were produced and are named as Vintage.

Statistics Institute publishes the Creative Industries report 2017

It reveals that the total number of establishments dedicated to Creative Industries was 2,054, the majority (41.7%) belonging to the Arts sector.

San Juan, PR, December 17, 2018 — The Puerto Rico Statistics Institute (Institute) today released its report of Creative Industries in Puerto Rico 2017, as part of public policy aimed at supporting the development of this sector, in accordance with Law No. 173 of October 13, 2014, also known as the Act to Promote Creative Industries. This law summarizes creative industries into the following groups:

• Design (graphic, industrial, fashion and interiors)
• Arts (music, visual and performing arts and publications)
• Media (application development, video games, online media, digital content and multimedia)
• Creative Services (architecture and creative education)

Here are some of the publication's key findings:

1. The total number of establishments dedicated to Creative Industries totaled 2,054. With 41.7% of the establishments, the Arts sector had the largest number of Creative Industries. Within this sector, the specific industries of Computer Systems Design were the one with the highest number with 195 establishments (10.2%).
2. The largest number of establishments (59.3%) was characterized by being in the category of 1 to 4 employees.
3. In terms of the number of employees per Creative Industry, the Media sector accounted for 46% (8,454) of the people employed in Creative Industries.
4. The largest number of employees is in the Computer Systems Design industry with 2,154 employees.
5. The Creative Industries were numerically dominated by the male population. The number of male population totaled 34,542 (63%) people, while the employed female population was estimated at 20,323 (37%) people.
6. The average annual wage for all industries was $28,680, the median was $23,650 and the minimum was $6,492.
7. The highest average annual wage was for the Software Publishing-related industry at $118,200.
8. The highest average annual salary, by occupation, was System Software Developers with $62.120.

Francisco Pesante González, author of the report, stated that “despite the fact that Puerto Rico has been in recession for more than 10 years, and has had to face the effects of hurricanes Irma and María, the 2017 indicators reveal consistent growth in exports from creative industries.”

For his part, Dr. Orville M. Disdier, Acting Executive Director, said: “With this third report prepared and published by the Institute of Statistics, we reiterate our commitment to join forces with the Institute of Culture and the Trade and Export Company, aimed at continuing the promotion and support of Creative Industries in Puerto Rico.”
