The Puerto Rico Statistics Institute creates a section with data and graphics on COVID-19 statistics in Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rico Statistics Institute created a new section with graphic representations or Dashboard on its website, called “COVID-19,” in which citizens will have access to official data on the impact of this virus in Puerto Rico, according to data provided by the Department of Health, said the Institute's executive director, Dr. Orville M. Disdier.

Among the data that users will be able to access in the Dashboard the following are included: the total number of people evaluated or under evaluation, their average age, number of positive, negative and pending cases, as well as the distribution by sex and health region. In addition, raw data can be obtained through this section, so that researchers could carry out their own statistical analyses. It is expected that as the Department of Health provides more information, the tool will continue to be updated and improved.

“Having a detailed, up-to-date statistical tool accessible to all citizens is crucial right now. We urge that the Department of Health continue to provide us with updated data on a continuous and expeditious basis to, in turn, make them accessible to all citizens,” said Dr. Disdier.

PUERTO RICO STATISTICS INSTITUTE AND FEDERAL ENTITY SHARE IDEAS TO IMPROVE THE COACH TRAINING PROJECT IN THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

San Juan, Puerto Rico, April 8, 2019 — Dr. Orville M. Disdier, Acting Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics (Institute) participated in the first meetings this year of the Board of Directors of the Regional Educational Laboratory of the North East & Islands (REL‐NEI), an entity subsidized by the Federal Department of Education. Disdier, who has been a member of the Board of Directors of that organization for some years, reported that during the day, initiatives of great importance for the island were discussed, including Puerto Rico Data Coaches Training, an innovative project that is forming Coaches, within the Department of Education.

“This project is of great importance to the Department of Education because it is through these Coaches, barriers are being identified that may be impeding the development of a culture based on data and removing such barriers. During the meetings with REL‐NEI, we discussed options to continue improving this project,” Disdier explained.

The REL‐NEI's main objective is to carry out scientific research and training aimed at supporting education systems based on empirical evidence. The REL‐NEI translates this empirical evidence into public policy proposals and best practices in teaching and learning processes. REL‐NEI is one of 10 Regional Laboratories and is comprised of Puerto Rico, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Vermont.

Other topics that were addressed and discussed at the meetings were the development of the workforce at the preschool level, learning the English language, effective alternatives to traditional graduation processes, reducing chronic absenteeism, and geospatial analysis to understand barriers to teacher recruitment.

“The mission of the institute is not only to coordinate the production service of the statistics produced in Puerto Rico, but also to promote research capacity and unite academics, researchers and public officials to objectively support government management, in this case, the management of Puerto Rico's public education system. As the official institution in Puerto Rico for the promotion of a data culture, at the Institute we are available to provide our full support to these data coaches from the Department of Education,” explained Dr. Disdier.

Although researchers and academics from the Laboratory for Educational Research and Development (WestEd) and the Education Development Center (EDC) direct most of the research and projects, they work as a team and in collaboration with the governments of all the jurisdictions that make up the REL‐NEI. The Puerto Rico Department of Education and the Institute are an integral part of these efforts. During this and the coming years, the results of these investigations will be announced.

Statistics Institute launches subscription system to offer recent statistical products

The service is free of charge

Current statistics, is the new official registry of the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics to provide, through a subscription system, recent statistical products to citizens. Subscribers of Current statistics they will receive relevant data directly to their emails on specific topics in which they indicated that they had an interest. In this way, they will have up-to-date information on preferred data, whether for work, study, business or general interest purposes.

Through this system, whose registration process is quick and simple, subscribers will select the topics of interest on which they want to receive updated data once they are available. The Institute will also share with subscribers updated information that is considered to be of interest to the subscriber community. The subscription service to Current statistics it's free, but interested parties must register through the following link: Subscriptions.

“This new service allows us to continue to make the data and statistical products generated by the Institute accessible to all people. In the same way, it is an excellent tool to continue educating about the importance of statistics, since eventually subscribers will have exclusive access to Current statistics vlog, in which educational information, novel and relevant to the field of statistics, will be published,” said Dr. Orville M. Disdier Flores, Executive Director of the Institute.

The service, as reported, is aimed at anyone interested in obtaining statistical data such as researchers, health professionals, statisticians, teachers, demographers, journalists, university students, human behavior professionals, public servants, among others.

All statistical products produced or published by the Statistics Institute are available at www.estadisticas.pr. However, subscribers to Current Statistics will have the advantage of receiving direct notifications to their email about the most recent data produced or published by the Institute.
