BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE INSTITUTE OF STATISTICS ANNOUNCES THE ELECTION OF ARNALDO CRUZ, CO-FOUNDER OF ABRE PUERTO RICO, AS ITS NEW PRESIDENT

San Juan, PR, August 1, 2018 — The Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Statistics Institute (Institute) today announced the unanimous election of Arnaldo Cruz, co-founder of Abre Puerto Rico and director of Research and Analysis of Foundation for Puerto Rico, as the new president of the organization.

Cruz was elected at the first meeting of the Institute's Board of Directors held yesterday afternoon and in accordance with the provisions of Section VII of the Institute's Internal Regulations. It establishes that the members who will occupy seats on the Executive Committee, composed of the President, Vice President and Secretary of the Board, will be elected during the first meeting of the Board of Directors at the beginning of each fiscal year and by a majority vote of those present.

“I am grateful for the opportunity given to me to work with an excellent team such as the Institute of Statistics, under the executive direction of Dr. Mario Marazzi-Santiago,” said the new President of the Board of Directors of the Institute, who holds a master's degree in Public Policy from Harris School of Public Policy Studies, from the University of Chicago.

“I accept this great challenge, aware of the great need that our government has to improve the accessibility and quality of its statistics and the enormous fiscal challenges for these purposes. At the Institute of Statistics, we are available to support the Government of Puerto Rico and achieve important goals of common interest, such as the quality of public data and government transparency, in all aspects,” Cruz said.

On the other hand, the position of vice-president of the Board of Directors of the Institute will be occupied by the doctor in Economics, Antonio J. Fernós, who served as president for the past 2 years and the position of secretary by the Lcdo. Alex López, who is currently serving as an advisor to the Puerto Rico Senate.

Meanwhile, Ana L. Dávila, PhD in Demography and professor of the Demography Program at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), Medical Sciences Campus, Ana L. Dávila and the PhDs in Statistics and professors from the Faculty of Business Administration of the UPR, Recinto de Río Piedras, Marta Álvarez and Sonia C. Balet, will continue as members of the Board of Directors.

The Puerto Rico Statistics Institute is an autonomous governmental entity responsible for coordinating the Government's statistical production service to ensure that the data collection and statistics systems, on which public policies are based, are complete, reliable, and have quick and universal access. The Institute has in its inventory, accessible through https://estadisticas.pr.gov, about 300 statistical products. In addition, it is a custodian and provides access to over 100 data sets or “data sets” through https://data.pr.gov and to over 40 tables and more than 6 thousand indicators through: https://www.indicadores.pr.

In addition, as the leading entity of the State Data Center (SDC) of Puerto Rico, the Institute manages the SDC portal, which contains the main statistical reports and publications of the U.S. Census Bureau on Puerto Rico, specifically those that are most in demand, such as annual population estimates; the Puerto Rico Community Survey (Puerto Rico Community Survey) and official statistics on Puerto Rico's 10-year population and housing censuses, among others. Puerto Rico Statistics Institute publishes Strategic Plan 2022 - 2025

The design took into account the opinion of employees in all sectors of the economy, employees of the Institute and the general public

September 28, 2022: Building on the achievements made in the previous Strategic Plan, the Puerto Rico Statistics Institute published its Strategic Plan 2022 - 2025. In order to achieve a comprehensive plan aligned with the current needs of society, the opinion of users of the Institute's products and services, as well as the opinion of the general public, was taken into consideration. In addition, an internal analysis process was carried out using the SWOT methodology (strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats).

“Among the most revealing findings of the analysis, the need for more budget and human resources capable of updating statistics more frequently, improving our technological platforms and achieving fiscal and administrative autonomy for the Institute stand out. We converted this input into goals within our strategic plan to advance our mission of continuing to publish reliable and important statistics for citizens and expanding their reach and dissemination,” said the president of the Institute's Board of Directors, Dr. Javier Hernández.

The new Strategic Plan focuses on the following 10 goals:

• Maximize the participation and effectiveness of the Statistics Coordination Committee (CCE).
• Establish and strengthen projects aimed at “filling the various empty spaces” in the various economic, social, environmental and cultural statistics.
• Strengthen the management structure of statistical projects to expand the capacity to carry out statistical and oversight projects.
• Strengthen the administrative structure that allows the proper functioning of internal processes.
• Improve the capacity and quality of technology, information systems, and the Institute's portals.
• Improve public exposure, marketing and education about our products and services.
• Strengthen, expand and modernize the Academies and Workshops Program.
• Establish and strengthen alliances with the scientific community and non-governmental entities.
• Promote the strengthening of fiscal and administrative autonomy.
• Move the Institute's physical facilities to a larger infrastructure appropriate to current needs.

Regarding additional services that the Institute could offer, respondents suggested that specialized workshops and training, scientific advice, multisectoral collaboration and community research, among others, be provided.

“Although the Institute already offers some of these services, the survey results indicate that these efforts need to be maintained and strengthened. Hand in hand with that, we must strengthen the Institute's marketing to better publicize the services we offer,” concluded Disdier.

Puerto Rico Statistics Institute releases results for fiscal year 2021-2022

In one year, they update data on violent deaths, gender-based violence, child abuse and present the first report on the needs of the deaf community in Puerto Rico

September 12, 2022: The Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics released its Results Report for the 2021-2022 fiscal year, which includes a summary of the most significant achievements during this period.

“During the 2021-2022 fiscal year, the Institute continued and initiated several comprehensive projects and programs with a significant impact on Puerto Rico. This is thanks to technological innovation and the undisputed commitment of an excellent team,” said Dr. Orville M. Disdier Flores, executive director of the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics.

The report highlights the updating of data on violent deaths in Puerto Rico, through the publication of the 2018 Annual Violent Deaths Report. Later this year, the report for 2019 and then the report for 2020 will be published. The Puerto Rico Violent Death Notification System (PRVDRS) collects, analyzes and publishes information on all violent deaths in Puerto Rico that occur due to suicide, homicide, unintentional firearm injuries, deaths due to legal intervention (except the death penalty) and deaths with undetermined intent.

The report also points out that it was possible to obtain more and better statistics on gender-based violence in Puerto Rico, published in the Platform for Statistics and Indicators of Gender-based Violence. Regarding this topic, the Institute drafted guidelines for the implementation of the System for the Compilation and Management of Statistical Data on Gender-based Violence in Puerto Rico, in compliance with Law 40 of August 27, 2021, and worked with the Puerto Rico Police Bureau to draft collaboration agreements.

Disdier stated that, “in an achievement for the deaf community in Puerto Rico, the Institute conducted a study on the needs of this community, both the adult population and the children and the tools their teachers need to support them in schools.” This new product, called Deaf Community Needs Study: Interactive Report, presents the first results of the survey that the Institute conducted, both to deaf and partially deaf people, and to the general public. In addition, the interactive report presents the results of focus group interviews with teachers of students with hearing difficulties. The Institute will continue with additional phases of the study in fiscal year 2023.

In the same way, it should be noted in the report, the development and publication of the Puerto Rico Child Abuse Profile: Interactive Report 2018-2022, which consists of a new digital platform through which statistics related to child abuse are organized and summarized, based on secondary data provided by various local agencies and the federal government. Available statistics show the number of children abused per year, the rates of abuse, the geographical distribution of abuse, the distribution and magnitude of the types of abuse, the ratio of the perpetrator, and the contrast between Puerto Rico and other jurisdictions in the United States. Not only does this profile fill an information gap that existed since the previous publication, which dates back to 2015, but now the report is a digital and interactive one, in which the user can select between several years, categories and variables, and can even download the data for subsequent analysis.

“During the next fiscal year of 2023, we will continue to work on important contributions to the Puerto Rico Statistics Production Service. These efforts will continue to strengthen our capacity as a society to make decisions based on empirical data, which will continue, in turn, to help Puerto Rico set out on the path of sustainable socio-economic development,” concluded Disdier.
