At the launch of the first Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes Platform in Puerto Rico

The incidence rate of Type 1 Diabetes in the pediatric population (new cases per 100,000 people between 0 and 18 years of age) shows a tendency to increase over the years, with 2009 being the year with the lowest rate (20.5), and 2021 the year with the highest rate (38.4). Although there are variations, on average, the incidence rate shows an increasing trend of 1% per year. In the most recent available year, 2022, the incidence rate was 34.2 new cases per 100,000 people between 0 and 18 years old. These data were revealed during the presentation of the first Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes Platform in Puerto Rico, developed by the Statistics Institute of Puerto Rico in partnership with the Pediatric Diabetes Foundation. This platform provides essential statistical data for understanding and addressing Type 1 Diabetes in Puerto Rico and is available at: https://estadisticas.pr/en/diabetes-tipo-1.

“These data are essential to be able to establish public policies for management, allocation of funds and resources, for researchers, doctors and for the families of patients living with diabetes. We needed an entity such as the Puerto Rico Statistics Institute with the expertise and willingness to help us with the statistical process, which resulted in an important alliance of will between the Foundation and the Institute. Today we can present the result of the collaboration between the Foundation and the Institute,” said Bernardo Maldonado, president of the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Pediatric Diabetes Foundation.

According to the executive director of the Institute of Statistics, Dr. Orville M. Disdier, this platform represents an essential advance in the understanding and management of Type 1 Diabetes in the pediatric population. “These findings, presented for the first time on an interactive platform, provide a detailed view of the situation of Type 1 Pediatric Diabetes in Puerto Rico, which is essential for guiding public health policies and resource allocation,” said Dr. Disdier.

The findings detailed on the platform reveal significant data for the period from 2009 to 2022. Among these, the following stand out:

• Between 2009 and 2022, a total of 2,850 people between 0 and 18 years of age were diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes for the first time. On average, 204 cases of Type 1 Diabetes are diagnosed annually in people 18 years of age or younger.
• Most of the cases (67%) diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes for the first time were between 5 and 14 years old. The average age of these cases was approximately 10 years.
• Overall, 53% of the cases were male and the remaining 47% were female.

In addition, Mariana Benítez Hilera, executive director of the Pediatric Diabetes Foundation, emphasized the Foundation's work in collecting unique data since 2008. This is thanks to a collaborative alliance with the hospitals where these patients are diagnosed and pediatric endocrinologists. “Once a child is diagnosed with diabetes, the first help they receive at the hospital is from our Foundation, which in turn helps us to have contact with their family right from the start and help them throughout the education process,” said Benítez Hilera.

Dr. Marina Ruiz, a pediatric endocrinologist, emphasized that Type 1 Diabetes is the type of diabetes that most affects the pediatric population. “It's an autoimmune condition that has no cure and can't be prevented. The condition requires a multidisciplinary team, such as the one found at the Pediatric Diabetes Foundation, to achieve successful management. This is the first time that statistics on diabetes in children aged 0 to 18 have been generated in Puerto Rico, which will help position our island on the world map with validated and reliable data. This will lead to the development of clinical studies in the near future to continue expanding our knowledge of the condition. In addition, it helps to carry the message to communities so that they have symptoms present and thus avoid acute and/or chronic complications.” said Ruiz.

Updated data on femicide in Puerto Rico

Fifty-nine femicides were reported in Puerto Rico between 2021 and 2023

November 9, 2023. San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rico Statistics Institute (Institute), updated the data on femicide in Puerto Rico, presented in the section entitled “Femicide Statistics”, through its Platform for Statistics and Indicators on Gender Violence (See: https://estadisticas.pr/en/Comite-Pare). According to Mariluz Bezares, Manager of Statistical Projects at the Institute and Coordinator of the Puerto Rico Violent Death Notification System (PRVDRS), in 2023, six (6) of every 10 homicides of women were femicides (60%). Other highlights from this update include:

• In 2023, 87% of intimate femicides were with firearms (In 2021, 61% of intimate femicides were with firearms and in 2022, 77% of intimate femicides were with firearms).
• In 2023, 53% of intimate femicides occurred among women aged 25 to 44 (In 2021, 61% of intimate femicides occurred among women aged 25 to 44 and in 2022 54% were among women aged 45 to 64).
• Thirteen (13) is the total number of femicides between 2021 and 2023 where the aggressor committed suicide after killing the victim.
  • Of these, thirteen (13) were in the context of intimate femicide and one (1) was in the context of family femicide. From January to September 2023, five (5) were in the intimate context.
• As of September 2023, a total of nineteen (19) cases of femicide have been registered.
• In 2023, 55 violent deaths of women were recorded (In 2021, 67 violent deaths of women and one (1) death of a trans person were recorded, and in 2022 there were 84 violent deaths of women).
• In 2023, 52% of women's violent deaths were due to homicide, and 42% were due to suicide.
• In 2023, 50% of female homicides occurred among women between 25 and 44 years old.

The data collected and presented by the Institute arise in part as a result of collaboration with various entities, including the Puerto Rico Police Bureau, the Institute of Forensic Sciences and the Demographic Registry of the Department of Health.

Starting today, September 18, 2023, pre-registration begins for the offer of workshops and Webinars free of charge from the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics. This virtual offer of eight workshops with 12 sessions and four Webinars, will provide solutions for the access, management and analysis of government statistical data and are carried out with rigor and quality in content development by specialists.

The format online offers the opportunity to participate to government officials and the general public, since the format is asynchronous, that is, within the time available to the participant. In the same way, multiple sessions are included, allowing participants the flexibility to enroll on those dates that are most convenient. Interested individuals can complete pre-enrollment at https://estadisticas.pr.gov/academia.

The topics included are:

• R statistical analysis software: one of the most commonly used open-access and user-friendly software for Data analytics and Data Science.
  • R basic: introductory workshop to help publicize and facilitate the adoption of this programming language for people interested in strengthening their resources for the processing, analysis, visualization and presentation of their statistical research.
  • RStudio: introduction to the integrated development environment (IDE, in English) for managing R, in the analysis, visualization and presentation of statistical analyses.
  • R Markdown: a comprehensive tool for generating reproducible reports and documents, which combine text, data analysis and visualizations.
  • Tidycensus: R library that facilitates the access and processing of data from the U.S. Census Bureau, such as the Census, population estimates and the Community Survey.

• Tableau Public: free platform that allows the use of interface commands to explore, create and publish data and visualizations online.
• Resources from the U.S. Census Bureau:
  • Population and housing data: presentation and performance of practical exercises on the tool https://data.census.gov/ to search for data on population and housing in Puerto Rico.
  • Access to microdata from the Community Survey: tool for customizing variable crosses for the analysis of population and housing data in Puerto Rico.
  • QGIS for analyzing data by geographical regions: QGIS is an open source Geographic Information System (GIS). In conjunction with data from the

U.S. Census Bureau, maps can be generated to analyze housing, economic, social and demographic issues.

On the other hand, the Webinars are live sessions, in which participants can connect via the Internet to a platform where they can watch and listen and ask questions to the speaker after completing the session.

The themes of the four Webinars They are:

• Interactive tools for accessing statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau: discussion and practical exercises to obtain data from the Community Survey and the Decennial Census for statistical analysis on Puerto Rico and other jurisdictions.

• Puerto Rico Manufacturing — Purchasing Managers Index: guidance on how to access this index and its subscripts, in addition to knowing how the data published in the monthly report prepared by the Institute are interpreted.
• Rate adjustment calculator: guidance on the usefulness of the rate standardization process and in the development of a calculation template.
• Preventing violence as a public health priority: guidance on the context of violence in Puerto Rico from a health perspective, where homicide statistics in Puerto Rico and worldwide will be presented.

No significant change in income in households and families in Puerto Rico

Based on the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Community Survey

San Juan, PR, September 14, 2022 — During the calendar year 2022, the median household income in Puerto Rico increased slightly, about $76, while the median family income fell by $363 compared to what was reported in 2021. This is revealed by the most recent Community Survey data released today by the U.S. Census Bureau, covering the 2022 calendar year. As a local liaison entity with the U.S. Census Bureau, the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics shared several findings from the new 2022 survey data:

1. The estimated median income for households and families showed no significant change, from $24,036 to $24,112 in households, and from $29,907 to $29,544 in families. This represented a change in household income of 0.3% and -1.3% in families.
2. Regarding the migratory indicators for Puerto Rico, the estimates for 2022 showed the following changes compared to the most recent year of available information (2021):
   • Nearly 16,000 people immigrated to other jurisdictions in the United States in net terms, a decrease compared to the previous available year (2021) where the net balance was close to 27,000 people emigrating.
   • Some 26,989 people immigrated from the United States, reflecting a slight decrease in immigrants of -1.4% compared to 2021, where an estimated immigration of 27,380 people was estimated.
   • In the other direction, some 42,990 people migrated from Puerto Rico to other jurisdictions in the United States, showing a decrease of 21.4% compared to the figure for 2021, which was 54,669 people.
3. Compared to the previous year 2021, during 2022, the following selected socioeconomic characteristics of Puerto Rico reflected statistically significant changes:
   • The unemployment rate fell from 13.1% to 9.9%, while the labor force increased by about 3.4%.
   • On the other hand, the percentages related to poverty increased in individuals (40.5% to 41.7%), in those under 18 years of age (54.9% to 57.6%) and in families (36.7% to 38.8%).
   • The percentage of grandparents who are responsible for their grandchild or granddaughter under 18 increased about seven points from 31.8% to 38.8%.
   • Among the total population aged 25 and over, the percentage of people with a higher education level or higher increased (79.6% to 81.7%), as well as those with a baccalaureate level or higher (28.5% to 29.8%).

“The survey information provides us with a recent overview of our society. Several of the indicators contrast with the reduction in the unemployment rate, while incomes (in households and families) remained unchanged. On the other hand, net emigration estimates were reduced for the third consecutive year since the post-hurricane emigration peak of 2018,” said Alberto L. Velázquez-Estrada, Manager of Statistical Projects at the Institute.

The main difference between household income and family income is that household income is considered to be the income of the head of household and any other individual in the household aged 15 years or older, even if not related to the head of the household. Family income, on the other hand, considers the income of all individuals in the household aged 15 years or older than if they are related to the head of the household.

Velázquez also indicated that as the leading entity of the Puerto Rico SDC, the Institute manages the SDC page, which contains the main statistical reports and publications of the U.S. Census Bureau on Puerto Rico, specifically those that are most in demand, such as annual population estimates; the Puerto Rico Community Survey (Puerto Rico Community Survey) and official statistics on Puerto Rico's decennial population and housing censuses, among others.
