Life tables provide context on mortality patterns, their distribution by age and sex, and survival rates as well. Specifically, life tables are used to determine among other things, the statistical indicator of life expectancy at birth for an specific population in a jurisdiction, a fundamental metric to understand the state of a society.
As part of the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics' (Institute) mandate to coordinate the government's statistical production service, areas of opportunity and information gaps are identified. This special report on life tables for the population of Puerto Rico fills an information gap of over a decade, as the last officially published life tables were for the 2008-2010 period, released in 2013.
