Report prepared by the Environmental Quality Board in compliance with the Federal Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health Act of 2000 informing the public of the presence of high levels of pathogens in recreational coastal waters, which could endanger human health. In the case of Puerto Rico, the parameter used to evaluate water quality on beaches is the level of enterococci. If the level of enterococcus concentration for a beach exceeds the “Beach Action Value” of 70 colonies per 100 milliliters of water (colonies /100mL), authorities will be required to alert the public to the risk of the same.
The purpose of this program is for bathers to reduce the risk of developing diseases when they are exposed to using a beach that is under a warning of bacterial contamination
