Main Variables
“cases” (for crimes and civil actions) filed and “other matters dealt with” of a civil and criminal nature subject to decision in the courts of Puerto Rico. Judicial activity statistics quantify data from judicial files in two stages; in the filing and in the final disposition. The statistical quantification unit “case” refers to: (a) In criminal matters: The crime presented for which one or more persons are accused constitutes the unit of statistical quantification. The formal indictment for lawsuits against each person initiates the cases. For each of the crimes contained in an accusation, a separate statistical case is formalized. (b) In civil matters: The petition or lawsuit submitted to the court for claim (s) in a dispute (s) between one or more parties against another party (s) constitute the unit of statistical quantification. That is, for each demand document, an independent statistical case is formalized. The first complaint filed, which appears in the title of the claim document, is the one that formalizes the statistical case, without quantifying the number of parties or the number of claims initiated by request or demand. The judicial provision terminates the statistical case: (a) In civil matters: It refers to the order, decision or final judgment issued by a judge and notified by the registry, by virtue of which the participation of the Court of First Instance of a claim in a dispute initiated is concluded. The judgment, resolution or orders that resolve only one or some of the claims initiated, leaving the others pending for decision, does not close the statistical case. Once all the disputes presented in the initial lawsuit have been settled, after the deadline for notifying the parties, the judgment becomes final and final and closes the statistical case. (b) In criminal matters: It refers to the document that dictates the judgment signed by a judge (a) and notified by the registry, by virtue of which the participation of the Court of First Instance ends. If there are evidentiary conditions or diversion mechanisms, after the period established in the corresponding measure has ended.
